The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.
