World Health Organization Raises Warning Over Severe Scarcity of Weight-Loss Medications

Fewer than a tenth of people who could benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy can access them, warns the global health agency as it issues its first guidance on the therapies.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide currently living with obesity, it is urging increased and just access to these injectable treatments.

Per forecasts, over two billion are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The new guidance acknowledges that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be addressed with thorough and lifelong support," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, limited production capacity, and supply-chain constraints are significant hurdles to broad access to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing significant weight, says the organization.

GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity

Despite the current most favorable scenario, the manufacturing of these medications might only reach approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.

The advice encourages governments and firms to widen availability, via approaches such as patent sharing.

A patent on semaglutide – the primary component of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in a number of nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Drugs Operate

These medications replicate a natural hormone to slow digestion, curb appetite and boost feelings of fullness so people consume fewer calories.

People typically begin shedding pounds in the initial weeks of beginning the once-weekly jabs.

Research suggests users may put most of the weight back on a year later of stopping the medication, as their normal hunger resume.

Being overweight or obese elevates your risk for experiencing health problems, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and specific cancers.

Obesity affects people in all nations and was responsible for millions of fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
